Prickly Pear Cactus

The prickly pear cactus, an iconic component of Texas’s natural landscape, holds ecological, cultural, and economic significance across the region. In recent years, however, this native plant has come under threat from the invasive cactus moth (Cactoblastis cactorum), a species capable of rapidly decimating prickly pear populations. Recognizing the urgency of this issue, students from Southside ISD to undergraduates at the University of the Incarnate Word have joined forces to investigate the spread, impact, and potential management strategies for this destructive insect.
